Panel 12: Tourism - Rebranding Africa

Africa is home to many of the world’s foremost tourist attractions. Millions of visitors travel to the continent every year to experience its many attractions, including expansive game reserves, towering mountains, pristine forests and stunning beaches. In spite of negative trends in global tourism arrivals, tourism to Africa has continued to grow. Yet, this industry remains greatly underdeveloped in most African countries. This panel will explore the innovative approaches being used to harness the latent potential of the tourism industry from the perspectives of key contributors, including the public and private sectors, media and entertainment, and travel and leisure. Panelists will discuss their involvement in exciting new developments such as South Africa’s marketing efforts prior to hosting the 2010 FIFA World Cup, an entrepreneur’s concept for and pending development of tourist lodges in Africa, the Africa Channel’s penetration of the North American cable TV market, and trends in the global economic environment that may impact each of these unique developments.
